New Works Competition (Shinsakuten), held once each year in late November or early December, to attract works from all fields of craft in Japan. Many pieces are then offered for sale to the public.

Since 1933, Yanagi Soetsu (1889-1961), founder of the Mingeikan, invited specific craftspeople to submit their works to be judged, exhibited and sold. The Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) was founded in 1936, and since then the New Works Competition (Shinsakuten) has been held annually at the Museum. As understanding of Mingei (folk art) grew, interest in the exhibition also mounted, and from 1953, the New Works Exhibition became an open competition attracting works from all fields of craft throughout Japan.

On display are new but traditional crafts based on utility and beauty and made for everyday use. In the 2004 competition, for example, 1489 works were submitted and judged by a committee of eleven. Nine were awarded prizes and 1262 were selected for display and sale. Nearly all craft categories were represented, including pottery, textiles, lacquer ware, wood work, bamboo work, metal ware, glass ware, paper products, paintings, and many others.
